Back to it!

I haven't forgotten the plane photos!

This one is actually from about 2 months ago....I was just busy posting new art that I kept leaving the poor guy out!

I went to Phoenix last weekend, and while downtown, I got some fun shots of lots of planes heading toward the nice Phoenix airport:

I always love getting two in a shot!

And of course making them look small...or making light posts look quite large

Warming filters are nice and fancy too

And then you just got a b&w of a plane

See it all

Here is ma lovely globe woodcut with prints!

I love this design, but I think I might be carving out the outside so that none of that is inked.

But here is what I have:

Keep 'em comin'

Today I wanted to go in a different route entirely- I never really do flowers and stuff, but I've started getting more interested in them. I've had LOTUS FLOWER scrawled in my sketchbook throughout the pages, but until now, never did anything with it.

So.

This was really cool because it's about a 2 1/2x 7" piece of mdf and I started the chevron pattern, decided to add the flower, and then wanted it to be simple and kinda different on the top.

I loveee the textures that come out of woodcuts; they're very raw but beautiful and powerful.

This time I put some black gesso on top of my sharpied drawing so that I could see my cuts more clearly. Helped a ton.

I keep running out of time and having to leave right after I start printing, so these still need some sanding work and definitely color, but for the most part I'm really pleased and think it came out well. :)

Woodcut is the New LBD

So.
Love woodcutting, just like I thought I would.

Here is my very first go at it! I decided to try it on a little baby mdf block, and what better for a little block like that than a Pantone swatch!!!

(and 214 C is a rosy pink color but all I had to work with in my limited time was pure magenta)

Alright, here's where I started. Used Lino cutting tools because that's what we had and my teacher said they worked about the same.

This here is my lovely carved block.

Got my magenta rolled onto it

FIRST PRINT!
Turned out pretty well, but I had to go back and sand my block a bit to try to get rid of the graininess.

Block on left and print on right. I'll tell you now, it's not easy to write backwards, but it sucks even more to carve backwards. That's how I lost the detail in the 'e' on the end...oh well.

This was awesome and I'm getting ready to start a bigger one, but I really want to play with the textures a lot more because that's what's so great about woodcuts. Wish me luck!

Experiment

Someone recommended I try to watercolor some of my mess up prints, so here they are!
I think I'd like to play more with the watercolor and not restricting it so much, but I still wanted to try it like this.

I don't know how I feel about some (especially the purple and green), but it was fun!
